Smithville woman dies in U.S. 169 multi-car crash

A 51-year old woman died on Thursday after a truck crossed the center line on U.S. 169 and hit her car head-on.
Teresa Lizar of Smithville was killed at the scene of the Northland traffic accident around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 11.
She was driving northbound in a red Saturn. The driver of a southbound red Toyota Tundra clipped a tow truck and then crossed the grassy median into the northbound lanes. The truck hit Ms. Lizar’s vehicle and then continued across the lanes, overturning and hitting four more vehicles.
The driver of the Tundra was thrown from his truck. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. A woman driving a blue Honda was also taken to the hospital with injuries. Both are in stable condition.
Police had received several 911 calls about an erratic and speeding driver. An investigation will determine if it is the same driver that caused the seven-vehicle wreck. Charges are pending the investigation.
The state is currently scheduled to install cable guards along this stretch of road. It is unknown if cable guards would have prevented the accident.
