The CDC has recently released a report that shows that concussions and TBIs (traumatic brain injuries) are on the rise. According to the CDC report, there has been approximately a 60% increase in concussions and other TBIs between 2001 and 2009. Around 71% of ER visits for sport related injuries were in boys and 70.5% for those were between 10 and 19 years old.
Although this rise is, in part, likely to be because young athletes are stronger, bigger, and play more aggressively these days, it is suggested that the rise in numbers that we see could also be because the public is more informed about concussions and know to see professional health care right away. Kansas and Missouri are two of 32 states that require athletic youth, parents and coaches to be educated about concussions so that they would know the signs and what to do.
Many concussions and other TBIs in youth in Kansas City are contributed to playing football, bicycling, and playing on playgrounds. If you or a loved one has suffered from a TBI, our Brain or Spinal Cord Injury or Child Injury lawyers at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys may be able to help.
