Sports Safety in KC : Hockey

Posted on Nov 09, 2011

A long time standing debate is still going on within the National Hockey League. It started with helmets back in 1979, eleven years after Bill Masterton died from head trauma: The NHL had announced that only players who had signed before '79 could go without helmets. Yet, in the early 1990s, many older players were still playing without any head protection at all. It wasn't until 1997 that all NHL players were finally wearing a helmet.

Today the debate pertains to whether or not there should be a visor rule inducted at all. Although more than half of the NHL players now wear visors, many older players feel that they should the choice. Because they grew up playing without shields, they feel that it will be too difficult to adapt due to visibility issues, which might affect how well they play. Some also feel that it should not be mandatory at all simply because they should have the choice to play without taking the extra precautions.

However, there are others who disagree. Players have lost their vision in an eye due to the lack of a visor while on the ice. They feel that player safety should take precedence over their freedom of choice.

There is new research that suggests that full-facial protection is the best option for hockey players. The full-face shield significantly reduces the playing time lost because of concussions. This, in turn, suggests that a full-face shield reduces the severity of concussions.
