Spring Snow Storm Causes Several Accidents In Metro Area

Winter weather on the first official day of spring was the cause of several accidents in the metro area over the weekend.  One person, Courtney W. Smith, 21, of Overland Park, was killed early Saturday morning when his vehicle collided with a tow truck.  The victim was traveling south on Highway 169 when his car hit a tow truck that was trying to pull another car out of a ditch.  No other injuries were reported.  The Kansas Highway Patrol preliminary investigation indicates that dangerous road conditions prevented him from stopping his car in time.

A 62-year-old Overland Park man was also killed over the weekend when his pickup truck hit a tree at 91st Street and Goddard Road.  At 4:57 p.m. Saturday witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored pickup truck traveling west on 91st Street when it left the roadway and struck a tree.  Again, slick roads appear to be the cause of this accident.

Five people were injured Saturday night when an SUV T-boned an ATA bus.  The accident occurred at Swope Parkway and Woodland Avenue.  MAST reported that five ambulances were called to the scene, but none of the injuries were life threatening.

Three people were injured in Overland Park on Sunday morning when an SUV lost control in the slushy conditions and hit an oncoming car head on.  The accident occurred on Metcalf Avenue between 72nd and 75th Streets and closed Metcalf for about four hours.  The driver of the SUV was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.  A driver of another car and one passenger were also taken to an area hospital for treatment.
