As spring arrives and kids head outside in droves, it pays to be watchful for playground falls. A new study conducted by the CDC reveals that 0-4 year old children are part of a high risk group for traumatic brain injury. Other high risk groups include teenagers (15-19 years old) and older adults (75+ years old).
Traumatic brain injury interrupts the normal brain function. Any sudden jolt or blow can cause a TBI. One-third of all deaths resulting from injury result in traumatic brain injury in the United States, many here in Kansas City, Missouri. Babies and toddlers often fall because their balance is still developing. Falling is part of growing up and most falls are harmless. However, stairs, furniture with hard or sharp edges, and inclines increase the risk of falls and in turn increase the risk of traumatic brain injury.
Parents are well advised to be concerned because timing is crucial when evaluating and treating a traumatic brain injury. According to neurologists, treatment must begin within 60-90 minutes. Compounding the danger, many brain injuries are not immediately apparent, which makes them difficult to detect and diagnose, particularly when young children are involved.
