Stay Safe in Kansas and Missouri-- 4th of July Safety Tips

Posted on Jun 30, 2011

Monday is the 4th of July, the day we celebrate our Independence. It is a day of celebration, fireworks, grilling out and getting together with family. Every year there are dozens of accidents right here in Kansas and Missouri. Here are some safety tips to help protect you and your family durning this joyous holiday weekend.

DO NOT:

  • Allow small children to light fireworks.
  • Use homemade fireworks.
  • Re-light a dud firework. If a firework does not light, wait 20 minutes then soak it in water.
  • Throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or other flammable materials.
  • Stand over fireworks.
  • Carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Light fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • Set off fireworks indoors.

DO:

  • Children should ALWAYS have an adult present.
  • Earplugs help if you have sensitive ears.
  • Keep hose or bucket of water close by in case of emergency.
  • Light ONE firework at a time.
  • ALWAYS dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then depositing them in a trashcan.
  • Wear proper eye protection.
  • Store unused fireworks in a cool, dry place away out of reach of children and pets.
  • Keep a safe distance-- at least 500 feet-- from professional fireworks displays.

Safe Grilling Tips:

  • Never use gas and charcoal barbecue grills indoors.
  • Make sure your grill is a safe distance from siding, deck railings, overhanging branches and house eaves.
  • Keep children and pets a safe distance-- at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using your propane or charcoal grill.
  • Never leave a barbeque grill unattended.
