Swimming Pool Safety

Posted on Jun 07, 2010

Swimming pools are a great place to cool off and have fun in the summertime, but they are also a prime place for people to get injured, mostly children. The two most common injuries sustained at a pool are slipping on the water around the outside of the pool, or drowning.

Brain injuries from near-drowning can be worse than suffering a TBI from a blow to the head. When someone is submerged in water it causes a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain, which is called hypoxemia.
When this happens it does not cause injury to just one section of the brain it causes damage to the entire brain unlike most brain injures from a blow to the head.

Three thousand children a year make trips to the emergency room for submersion injuries.

Children do things to put themselves in harms way such as jump off trees, roofs, and fences into the pool, but some miss the pool entirely.

Tips to keep children safe around and in the pool:

Never leave a child unattended even if they know how to swim. Children horseplay and don't make smart decisions.
(When small children fall in the water they usually don't panic, they just sink to the bottom of the pool unnoticed).

Even if a child has a floatie, that is no substitute for adult supervision.

In most areas having a barrier around a pool is the law. A fence is a good barrier, it prevents children from wandering into your pool.

It is a good idea to keep a lifesaver or a pool net or brush(with a long handle) by the pool to have someone struggling in the water to grab on to.

Pool owners should know cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, this can be a lifesaver when someone comes close to drowning.

Talk to your kids about pool safety and your expectations around the pool.
