The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was killed in a bizarre collision with an Amtrak train in Norther Berwick, Maine. The engineer of the locomotive as well as a undetermined number of the 112 passengers aboard the train were seriously injured in the fatal trucking-train accident that happened on July 11, 2011.
Police investigating the crash say the tractor-trailer plowed through the crossing gates and drove into the path of the Amtrak train. The collision caused a fire in the locomotive and at least one of the passenger cars.
Despite his injuries, the engineer was able to separate the burning engine from the passenger cars, which helped prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the passengers.
It has been reported that the railroad crossing safety lights were operational and the gates were lowered the truck was approaching the train crossing. Further investigations will hopefully determine why the truck driver failed to stop.
