Two workers dead, one injured in Lawrence on-the-job accident

A workplace accident at a Lawrence, Kansas fertilizer plant has left two men dead and another injured.
The accident occurred at the MagnaGro International plant on Lawrence’s east side at about 2:30 p.m. on April 1, 2010. A worker fell into a tank of a substance. The name of the substance has not been released, but authorities say it is not toxic unless inhaled in close quarters.
Emergency crews and hazardous material teams responded to the incident. The accident is still under investigation as officials are still trying to determine how the second man dies and how the third was injured.
The injured man and a firefighter who responded to the accident were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
MagnaGro has been involved in several hazardous material incidents in the past, including a violation of the Clean Water Act for dumping waste into the Lawrence sewer system.
