Two Workers Dead, Two Injured in BNSF Train Collision

In southwest Iowa, a tragic collision involving two Burlington Northern-Santa Fe trains claimed the lives of two railroad workers. Reports indicate the fatal train collision occurred on Sunday, April 17, 2011, in McPherson, IA., which is about five miles west of Red Oak.

The railroad workers who died in the work related accident have been identified as conductor Patricia "Trish" Hyatt and engineer Tom Anderson. The fatal train collision happened as the two BNSF trains were reportedly headed east, when the coal trail rear-ended a train transporting maintenance equipment.

The collision derailed 10 cars on the maintenance train to derail, along with the lead locomotive on the coal train. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
