In an effort to continue to be able to protect its players, NFL Charities last month donated over $100,000 to UC San Diego School of Medicine. Led by Dr. Mingxiong Huang at the San Diego school new technologies such as MEG Radiology Imaging and Diffusion Tensor Imaging are becoming more readily available not only athletes and soldiers, but for regular folk as well.
The MEG imaging allows neurologists to locate specifically where an athlete has suffered damage in the brain, which until recently was nearly impossible. By being able to locate the specific area of the brain has been injured, doctors will be able to tailor treatments for the patients.
In the NFL this season, the number of head injuries and concussions reported by players increased over the first eight weeks of the 2010 season. In the past, players and doctors had to rely on CT or MRI scans but these tests don't actually monitor the brain tissue, which is where the real damage is taking place.
