Workers Compensation
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has concluded an investigation into a work related injury accident that injured twelved workers at the University of Utah in November and now the college is facing a lawsuit seeking over $5 million in damages for the injured workers.
The contract workers were under the employ of Thermal West Industrial Inc. out of North Salt Lake, Utah. They were hired by the university to install hot-water piping trunks in a new tunnel system that was supposed to be inactive. When the pipes burst, 40,000 gallons of hot water poured into the tunnel system through a water line injuring 12 workers.
Reports indicate the water was nearly 400 degrees when it shot steam into the tunnels, scalding 12 workers.
OSHA determined Thermal West Industrial was not at fault for the accident and the university was cited in for failing to cap the inactive water line. Because of the accident, the company saw its safety ranking drop and as a result lost several big money contracts.
In addition, the lawsuit is seeking workers' compensation costs related to the work-related accident, which reached damages of over $4.8 million.
