Just last week, the United States Department of Labor is taking huge strides toward improving the child labor dilemma within our country.
The Department has publicly announced that employers who hire and work children will be forced to pay an increased fine. For children between the ages of 12 to 13, employment violators will be penailzed with a large fine, to the tune of six grand! This is quite a jump from what the previous fine was, only nine-hundred dollars. Also, these fines apply for each violation, meaning that employers who hire multiple children as workers could face hefty fines for each child that is illegally employed.
Even worse, employers who work children under the age of 12 will have to pay even more. Approximately eight grand for each violation. Again, this is a significant increase considering that the previous amount was only $1,150.
Those numbers could get even higher. If a child worker is injured on the job or if the employers have been convicted and fined in the past, but continue to work young children they could face fines as high as eleven grand.
The Fair Labor Standards Act sets forth provisions and safety measures to ensure that if children do in fact have to labor, they do not have to do so in an unsafe environment. For instance, the normal minimum age is 16 years, unless other exceptions apply.
What could have brought about this much needed change? The Secretary for the Department of Labor, Hilda Solis, has spoken out on the matter. She informs the public that the department recognizes that child labor is a serious problem within our country, and in order to improve this dilemma, the department felt that it was necessary to increase preventive efforts. And the department is not giving any sort of a grace period because these penalties went into effect immediately, beginning on June 1st.
