An Iraq war veteran and double amputee was killed when he was fell from a the Ride of Steel, a 208-foot-tall roller coaster at the Darien Lake Theme Park Resort in New York on July 8, 2011.
The victim, identified as Sgt. James Thomas Hackemer had lost both of legs as the result of a road side bomb while on duty in Iraq. He was ejected from the roller coaster causing an assessment of the rules and regulations of the roller coaster's policy. Hackemer's relatives say they don't blame the park for his death but some feel that rider responsibility and operator responsibility should be considered when deciding if someone should be allowed on a ride.
The roller coaster's posted rules on the park's website, guests with "certain body proportions" may not be able to ride the Ride of Steel, but no specifics were listed. On at least two other roller coasters at the park, it specifically bars people without both legs from riding the coasters.
