City council officials in Washington, Missouri have voted to end a three year program using red light cameras at two high traffic areas in the rural town after deciding they weren't helping to reduce injury accidents as well as hoped.
The cameras were installed three years ago and since the program began, the intersection at Highway 100 and Route 47 has seen 13 less accidents than the prior three years. Injury accidents have decreased by only 2 in the same time period. However, the overall number of actual injuries has increased from 21 to 32. Likewise, the Route A intersection with Highway 100 saw accidents drop by 4 to 51 but in comparison saw a more significant drop in injuries, dropping from 20 to 9 over the previous three year period.
