The University of Maryland football team has begun a new monitoring system to track the recovery of athletes suffering from concussion head injuries including traumatic brain injury. Using the Nintendo Wii gaming system, more specifically the Wii Fit system, team doctors are using exercises and tests within the game to keep track of an athlete's physical status.
Monitoring an athlete is not considered a single based treatment but an additional tool to help guide an athlete towards recovery. Traditional neurological tests are still required to make a final decision on whether or not an athlete can be cleared to play, but the Wii Fit offers a more entertaining way of rehabilitation and yet a fair assessment in monitoring recovery of balance for example.
