Will the "Disclose and Offer" Approach Work After Medical Accidents in Kansas City Hospitals?

Medical Malpractice cases have been decreasing at the University of Michigan Health System and the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago and experts believe it is because a new approach in dealing with patients. Denial is no longer an option and doctors instead are going with a near full disclosure approach, opting instead to go with a "full transparency" tactic in which doctors open the doors of communication with patients with an explanation of where and why the problem may have occurred, offering a quick remedy of the mistake and immediate plans to improve the area where the mistake was made-- and it seems to be working.

Since going with the "disclose and offer"approach, the University of Michigan has seen a dramatic decline in Medical Malpractic claims. Before the program began in 2001, there were 233 claims against the hospital. With a steady decrease each year, there were under 90 in 2007. The University of Illinois Medical has seen similar drops in Med Mal claims since it began a similar approach in 2006, called the Seven Pillars.  Currently several Chicago hospitals are now conducting the 'Seven Pillars' approach.
