Winter Safety Tips for Children in Kansas and Missouri; Sledding, Skiing

Posted on Jan 29, 2011

Winter safety is important in Kansas and Missouri.  With all of the snow that has fallen in the area over the past month, it has given children a chance to take part in their favorite winter time snow activities such as sledding, ice skating, skiing and snowboarding.  Before your child goes outside to play, they should know a few safety tips that can help prevent serious injury.

Frostbite Prevention

Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for winter weather.  Dress in layers and protect your hands and feet.  wear properly fitting hats, gloves and coats.  Parents, always make sure you are properly monitoring your child while they play outside and be realistic about how long you let them spend in snow and cold temperatures.

Sledding Safety

Always sled on gently sloping terrain that is covered in snow-- not ice.  Sled in an upright position.  This can prevent serious brain and spinal injuries in the event of a collision.  Having your child wear a helmet can prevent traumatic brain and head injuries.

Ice Skating Safety

First, properly check surroundings to ensure the ice is safe.  If necessary contact authorities to find out what locations have been approved.  Teach your child to always skate with the flow of the crowd and never cut across the ice.  Use the buddy system; never skate alone.

Skiing and/or Snowboarding Safety

Make sure your child is given proper instructions by trained professionals before skiing or snowboarding.  Stick to slopes appropriate skill level for your child.  Never ski or snowboard alone.
