Winter Will Come Quick! Prepare Your KC Child for Sledding Accidents

Posted on Aug 31, 2010

We know what you're thinking.  "Summer just ended, why should I worry about protecting my child in case of a sledding accident when there isn't even snow on the ground?"

Well we want to ensure that your child will be safe when snow comes, whether it be in early November or late February.  The truth is you can never be too careful.  Before you know it, it will be winter time, and if this winter is anywhere near as harsh as the winter we had last year, we want you to be aware of how to prepare your child for that unexpected snowday.

Let's start with the basics.  Sledding and many other winter activities involve danger.  No buts about it, anytime your young child is accelerating toward the bottom of a hill where there may be trees, bushes, rocks, fences, or any other injury-casuing objects, you should act with caution.

We know for a fact that winter activities have had injurious consequences because researchers have found a new annual average that has shocked parents and physicians alike: 20,000 kids a year are injured while playing outside in the snow.  This number is tremendous, but was determined to be accurte by researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

What is more, these researchers have been able to confirm that boys are more likely to experience injury than girls.  In fact, about sixty percent of all of those accidents can be attributed to adolescent boys between the ages of 10 and 14.

The fact that boys are more likely to be injured may not come as a surprise to many because studies show that the number of boys who are injured while engaging in recreational activities, including recreational activities from every season, far outnumbers the amount of girls who are injured.

Here are some more fast facts on sledding accidents based off of the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission's (CPSC) National Electronic Inury Survey:

-In the decade that stretched between 1997-2007, approximately 230,000 children experienced sledding injuries
-Fractures are the most common injury type for sledding accidents, about 26%
-Cuts and Bruises are the second most common type, totalling about 25%
-Spraining muscles accounted for 16%
-Head injuries equaled about 9%

In total, the head seems to be the most frequently injured area and this is noteworthy because head injuries are usually the most physically devastating.

And if you're thinking about visiting a "Designated Sledding Zone," think again.  These safety zones have also been studied and we now know that they are not at all effective at preventing injury to children.  In fact, just as many accidents happen in these safety zones as in unregulated zones.

You can protect your child by buying protective head gear and padding.  We encourage you to stock on safety gear before the first snowfall.  You can't be too careful.

If a child you love has suffered an injury and you believe that he or she is entitled to justice and compensation, we urge you to give anyone of our Kansas City Child Injury and Accident Attorneys a call right away.  The attorneys of Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys are committed to protecting children, and we want to help you.
