Worker Suffers Head Injury in Chicago; Kansas City Construction Workers Take Notice

A Chicago construction worker suffered a serious head injury after he fell down a hole on Thursday, April 21, 2011 in southwest suburban Chicago. The work related accident happened at the Calumet Water Reclamation District Plant, at 400 E. 130th St.

Reports indicate the accident victim, 50 year-old Jeff Andrews slipped from a ladder and fell 20 feet onto another worker at the bottom of a hole. Both workers were rescued by emergency crews who used a "stoke" basket to lift the two injured workers out of the muddy hole.

Andrews was rushed to a local hospital for treatment for a serious head injury. Doctors were forced to wait until his condition to stabilized before they could perform surgery on the victim. The other worker was hospitalized, but the extent of his injuries are unknown.

According to Chicago Fire Commisioner Robert Hoff, "One was at the top of the ladder (and) slipped.  It was very muddy back there.  It was clay; it was very slippery....He slipped and took a fall down the ladder.  He just grazed off the other individual."
