Hockey has become such a dangerous sport for players of all ages, that the future of the game is in question. Head injuries are the number one reason the game has gotten so dangerous. Recently, Sydney Crosby of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, suffered two serious head injuries in a four day period and now the future of what is a promising career is in jeapordy.
The main concern, however, is not just with professional hockey players but the rapidly growing number of children who are playing full contact hockey at a young age all over the world. A professor from the University of Alberta in Canada recently followed two Pee-Wee hockey teams and discovered that 10% of the players suffered some form of head trauma as a result of a collision or check.
At the junior hockey level in Quebec, Canada members of one league were tracked and it was found that one in four players suffered a concussion over a 52 game period and 7% of all players in the league suffered more than one traumatic brain injury.
Tracking head injuries in hockey is relatively new so it makes it difficult to compare numbers from the past because concussions haven't been kept track of the way they are now.
