Police Seek Witnesses in Lawrence Bicycle Accident

Posted on Jul 23, 2013

Kansas police are seeking more information surrounding an accident that killed a Lawrence bicyclist.

On Sunday evening, Hayley Barrios, 29, was riding her bicycle east on k-10 bypass near 27th street when she collided with a pickup truck. Kansas authorities were called to the scene shortly after 8pm where they found that the driver of the truck, Spencer Walter, 67, was not injured. Barrios was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they are still investigating the crash and are looking for the driver of a red car who drove through the intersection right before the accident occurred. Witnesses are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Detective, Jay Armbrister at 785-330-2828.

Our deepest sympathies go out to all those affected by this unfortunate accident. The family and friends of this young woman will remain in our thoughts as the investigation continues.

Bicycle-car accidents are tragic and can usually be avoided if bicyclists and drivers know how to share the road with one another. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times, whether you’re behind the wheel or behind the handlebars.
