Kansas City Police Officer Critically Injured, Wife Killed in Accident

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported a one-car accident north of St. Joseph, Missouri early Sunday morning involving an off-duty police officer.  Josh Zeplin, a Kansas City, Missouri police officer, was critically injured when he drove his 2007 Ford Edge off the road, hit an embankment and overturned.  Zeplin was airlifted to a St. Jospeh hospital for treatment.  His wife, Jennifer Zeplin was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Zeplins were traveling southbound on I-29 near the intersection of Route T when the accident occurred. 

According to Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin, it appears that Zeplin may have fallen asleep at the wheel.  Both Officer Zeplin and his wife were wearing seat belts.
