On Wednesday August 21, 2013, 36 girls from Pembroke Hill School left Kansas City by bus for a camp in Linwood, Kansas. The overnight trip was designed to be a wonderful beginning to their sixth grade year, but that is not how it ended. Instead, the bus allegedly overturned on a highway exit ramp connecting Kansas 7 with Kansas 32 in Bonner Springs. The girls never made it to camp.
Many Sixth Grade Girls Were Injured
In the immediate aftermath of the accident, there were conflicting reports about how many of the 36 girls were injured. We know that at least 18 girls, and possibly as many as 30 girls, were hurt. The girls, and the bus driver who was also injured in the crash, were taken to five area hospitals. In the hours immediately after this Kansas bus crash, there were a variety of injuries reported among the girls. Those injuries included suspected:
- Broken bones
- A more serious brain injury
- A possible spinal cord injury
- Cuts and bruises
The injuries ranged from minor to serious, according to news reports.
