A soldier in the United States Army was killed in a motorcycle accident on I-40 and U.S. 70 in North Carolina last week. Reports indicate that Staff Sgt. Edwin Ramos was exiting onto U.S. 70 from I-40 when the brakes on the motorcycle locked up and he struck a guard rail. The soldier was thrown from the bike and suffered massive injuries.
Traumatic brain injuries suffered in motorcycle accidents are serious medical emergencies. Even if there are no symptoms immediately after the crash, if you know that you have hit your head you should get immediate emergency medical attention. If you show any of the listed signs and symptoms, see a doctor right away. Often the swelling that occurs after the injury will do more harm than the injury itself. Early intervention is the best way to prevent potentially fatal brain injury complications.
While, negligence is almost always involved in these types of accidents. But blame can not and does not rest entirely with the person driving the motorcycle. Drivers of cars, vans and SUVs need to be mindful of motorcyclists. With the summer months approaching there will be more and more motorcycles hitting the road. Motorcyclists, on the other hand, just can't abuse the road and hope everyone is watching out for them.
While at the time of this report, there is no way of indicating who was at fault, especially because the location of the accident was an uncontrolled intersection, it is important to always follow not only the Kansas and Missouri driving laws but to also pay attention and watch out for each other.
