Kansas City Car Crash Victim? What should you do in the moment of a crash to prevent serious injury?

It’s happening. You can see it coming. Everything slows down for a moment but you have no control. You can’t stop it. You are about to be involved in an automobile accident.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know most of the time, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. But there are times when you can see the events unfolding. In that moment, what do you do? What can you do? Believe it or not, you may be able to do in order to avoid a serious injury and it starts the moment you get in your car.

The first thing you can do is to make sure you and the rest of your passengers are properly wearing your seat belts. This includes making sure small children are properly restrained using state approved car seats. Always wear your seat belt properly, never with the chest strap behind your back.

While driving, keeping the proper distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you can prevent accidents or at least minimize damage and injury in case the unexpected happens. Follow proper speed limits, noting decreased speeds in construction zones and school zones. Use your best judgment in severe weather conditions such when rain, snow or ice accumulates on the road.

However, we all know that you can do everything in the book to prevent an accident but you can never depend on another motorist to extend the same courtesy. You may not always see it coming but when you do it’s important you know what to do. The few seconds you have to prepare for impact could be the difference in minor injuries and serious injury even death.

Before impact, brace yourself by locking your arms in the 10 and 2 positions on the steering wheel, keeping your wrists locked. Going limp might be your first instinct but it can also result in catastrophic injury. By bracing your body for impact and keeping your body rigid you almost become part of the vehicle. It may not completely protect you, but it will help to minimize damage if not save your life.

If you know you are about to be rear ended or hit from the side keep your head back against the seat and keep looking forward. This can prevent severe whiplash and neck injury you might suffer in a collision.
