Bicycle Tips for Sharing the Road

Bicyclists and Motorists – Tips For Sharing The Road

Tips For Motorists:

  1. Bad road conditions can cause motorcyclists and bicyclists to change speed and lane position and you should be prepared to react to this.
  2. Give motorcycles a full lane width, and if possible give a full lane to bicycles and mopeds too. The bicycle is much slower moving and you may be required to slow down. Wait for a clear road before passing a cyclist in a lane that is too narrow to share. If you are making a right turn, you must yield to the bicyclist in front of you. Slow down and remain behind the cyclist until it is clear for you to turn.
  3. Bicyclists can travel fast and when making a left turn you should yield to oncoming bicyclists unless you are certain you can complete your turn before the cyclist reaches the intersection.
  4. Before you open your car door, check for passing bicyclists
  5. Bicycle lanes are designated by for use by bicycles. You can cross a bicycle lane to turn or enter or leave the roadway but you must yield to bicyclists in a bicycle lane.

Tips For Bicyclists:

  1. You have the same rights and responsibilities as a motor vehicle operator on public streets and highways. Always ride with traffic. Generally ride as near to the right side of the roadway as you can safely do so. The right side often contains hazards (i.e., ditches, cracks, sand, gravel, etc.) and you should leave sufficient room between your bicycle and such hazards.
  2. Move toward the middle or left of the lane or roadway, as appropriate, when making left turns, avoiding hazards, when lane width is too narrow to share with other vehicles, and when there is a right-turn-only lane and you are going straight.
  3. Always check for traffic and make sure to signal and provide plenty of notice before you change lanes or your position within a lane. On a one-way street, bicyclists can also ride as far to the left as it is safe to do so.
  4. You are prohibited by law from riding a moped on the federal interstate highway system.
