As the world watched the Olympics in London in the summer of 2012, some London pedestrians were not watching where they were going. The City of London has gone as far as to put padding on some lamp posts because distracted pedestrians walk into the poles so often.

The problem of distracted walkers is not limited to London. Distracted pedestrians in Kansas City, and around the United States, are putting themselves and others at risk when they use their cell phones, MP3 players or other devices while walking.

How Big a Problem is Distracted Walking?

While fatal pedestrian accident statistics are compiled in most states, there is not yet accurate data on how many fatal pedestrian accidents are caused by distracted walkers. A recent study done by researchers at the University of Maryland found that there were at least 116 deaths over the last six years that occurred when pedestrians were wearing headphones.

Distracted pedestrians may be a danger not only to themselves, but also to others.  A car that swerves to avoid a distracted pedestrian may hit another vehicle, biker, or walker. That accident could also take someone’s life.
