The Deadliest Accidents on Missouri Highways: Over-ride and Under-ride Trucking Accidents.

Not only are commercial trucks much larger and heavier than the average passenger vehicle, but they also ride higher off the ground. Unless a driver has a large SUV, minivan or pick-up truck, the front of most cars falls well below the bottom of a truck. This can lead to the most deadly 18-wheeler accidents of all, under-ride and over-ride semi-truck accidents.

An under-ride accident occurs when a car crashes into the back of a truck. If the car crashed into a smaller vehicle, it would collide and then stop. In an Under-ride accident the front of the car goes under the back of the truck. This causes the back of the truck to strike inside the passenger cabin of the car. Under-ride accidents are often fatal and particularly dangerous because victims who survive these accidents are almost always left with head, brain, and spine injuries.

An over-ride truck accident occurs when a large truck rides over the smaller car in front of it. Override accidents are often caused by:

Many trucks have additional guards installed around the bottom of the truck in order to prevent deadly under-ride and over-ride accidents. If a truck has the additional guards, then the front of the car will strike the back of the truck and the car will not slide under the bottom of the truck. While these crashes may still result in serious injury, they are not as deadly as over-ride and under-ride crashes and victims are less likely to sustain disabling head, neck and brain injuries.
