Why is the potential of a Z-Pak (Zithromax) related heart death in the news if the risk is so rare?

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients taking Zithromax had an increased chance of suffering sudden cardiac death when compared to patients who took Amoxicillin or who decided to simply wait out their infection without the use of antibiotics. Specifically, the study found that approximately 85 out of every 1 million Zithromax prescriptions will result in sudden cardiac death.

85 out of 1 million is a small number, yet it is significant for the following reasons:

  • Zithromax is often taken for simple infections such as sinusitis that will resolve on their own.
  • Patients often request Zithromax because it is a five-day course of treatment as compared to the typical 10-day course of antibiotics.
  • Amoxicillin users face a 32 out of 1 million chance of sudden cardiac death, which is approximately the same as people who did not take antibiotics and lower than the risk for Z-Pak users.

The study was also significant because it came as a surprise to many who long thought this common drug to be safe.
